The Human Rights and a Just Society is a symposium hosted and organized yearly in cooperation with the John Felice Rome Center of Loyola University Chicago, Loyola’s Polish Studies Program. This year’s symposium will be held in on Oct. 13-14, 2025. This year’s very relevant topic is “Democracy in Crisis: Authoritarianism and Its Impact on Human Rights and the Rule of Law.”
The University of Warsaw’s Department of Political Science and International Studies will host the symposium, which brings in speakers and audience members from all over the world. The symposium will be held in the Professor Jan Baszkiewicz Auditorium in the Auditorium Building on ul. Krakowskie Przedmieście 26/28 in Warsaw.
Included in this year’s speakers are The Honorable Virginia Kendall, the Chief Judge in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois on the topic “The Pillars of Democracy and How They Are Under Attack,” and Professor of Political Science at Loyola University Chicago Dr. Alexandru Grigorescu about “Democracy and Human Rights: How are they the same and how they differ.” Another fascinating topic is “How Polish Judges Fought to Keep Their Independence” with two panelists.
Students will present “Social Media and Democracy – A Student Perspective” and there will be a panel discussing “Democracy in Crisis: Lessons from Around the World.”
And Agnieszka Bienczyk-Missala, a 2016 Karski GLS scholarship alumnus, provides opening remarks and is on one of the panels.This annual GSL scholarship is funded by JKEF.
