Since the first presentation of a stage reading, Remember This: The Lesson of Jan Karski, created by Derek Goldman and Clark Young for the Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics at Georgetown University in 2014, the play has evolved into a successful one-man show and has recently assumed new lives with different actors and creative teams. The Jewish Repertory Theater in Buffalo Getzville, NY, ran a new production of Remember This: The Lesson of Jan Karski from October 31-November 24, 2024, starring David Lundy as the Polish emissary.
“But what is the lesson of Jan Karski?” the director, Robert Waterhouse, asks in the program. “While so much of the world—the Middle East, Ukraine, Sudan—is consumed by war, and while the most sympathetic leaders seem unwilling or unable to end the suffering, what is our responsibility? Karski did not succeed in persuading the Allied powers to intervene in the Holocaust, but he did succeed in leaving with us questions about individual responsibility in the face of the Indifference of governments. These are the questions that should haunt us now.”
David Lundy is predominantly known for his theater work and has performed at numerous venues, including Irish Classical Theater Co., the Kavinoky Theater, New Phoenix, Tornspace, Lancaster Opera Houze, and Shakespeare in Delaware Park. He won the ARTIE Award for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role in Sight Unseen (at JRT). After having seen and fallen in love with David Strathairn’s performance in the play, he decided to approach this material and tackled the role with great conviction, dedication, and respect. “It was one of the highlights of my career,” said Lundy, who received great reviews for portraying Karski.
Here is a selection of critical reviews praising the production and underlining the play’s universal message:
