Katyn Memorial Commemoration Held in Baltimore

Two Karski representatives attended the Katyn Remembrance at the Katyn Memorial over the weekend. Giordano “Gerry” Chiaruttini and Jane Robbins were touched by the ceremony commemorating the deaths of over 22,000 Poles in 1940. Many speakers talked of the importance of knowing history, including its tragic events.

A survivor of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, Alfreda Jamrosz, read a poem of sadness and hope. Then Rabbi Amy Scheinerman recited the kaddish for those who died and said “For there to be change, there must be remembrance.”  The two women hugged as a symbol of unity.

The commemoration, the thirteen annual such event, was organized by the National Katyn Memorial Foundation, headed by Richard Poremski. A luncheon followed at the Polish National Alliance. The spectacular Katyn sculpture is near the Inner Harbor, a revitalized area of the city, and is well worth seeing.
