Karski on the Vistula River

Visualization of the Promenade by SISCOM Visualization of the Promenade by SISCOM

Jan Karski’s name will soon grace the promenade on the left bank of the Vistula River in Warsaw, Poland. Considered the most beautiful part of the Vistula embankment, this section of the promenade lies close to Warsaw’s historic Old Town and the Royal Castle, making it a most appropriate place for commemorating the legendary emissary of the Polish Underground. More so because with leisurely pathways, cafes and restaurants, the design promises to be – just like Karski – elegant, stylish and soulful. The Warsaw City Council voted on this project last year which is to be completed by July 2014. The “Jan Karski. Unfinished Mission” program of the Polish History Museum and the Jan Karski Society were instrumental in making it happen. Combined with the newly opened Karski Bench outside of Warsaw's Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Varsovians and tourists alike will be able to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Karski’s birth by strolling along Karski Promenade and taking their photographs sitting next to the great Pole (and American) on the Karski Bench. Ewa Wierzynska, who serves on the Board of Directors of the Jan Karski Educational Foundation and the Fundacja Edukacyjna Jana Karskiego, has been very involved in this initiative.
